NOTE TO INTERNAL APPLICANTS: INTERNAL CANDIDATES IN THE SAME CLASSIFICATION AND/OR PAYGRADE AS THE POSITION POSTED WILL NOT RECEIVE A PAY ADJUSTMENT IF SELECTED.
Under general direction, the purpose of the position is to perform specialized skilled work involving the maintenance, diagnostics and repair of gasoline or diesel driven heavy equipment, machinery and tools. Employee functions at senior level to perform complex work with independence, and more difficult work under the guidance and supervision of the Master Mechanic. Position contributes to effective and efficient division operations and is responsible for maintaining accurate records of maintenance and repairs, as well as, maintaining various inventory records. This position is required to participate in On-Call rotation and may be required to work after normal business hours according to applicable County policy i.e.: Call Out or Emergency-Disaster.

The list of essential functions, as outlined herein, is intended to be representative of the tasks performed within this classification.   • Performs diagnostic tests on failed and/or broken-down vehicles and heavy equipment to determine appropriate repairs and/or maintenance. 
  • Performs complex preventive maintenance, overhaul, and repair services of on automobiles, and heavy trucks, mechanical equipment and other gasoline and diesel driven motors; performs or assists with highly complex repairs.
  • Performs a wide variety of skilled mechanic work, repairing, servicing, and adjusting engine, e.g., hydraulic controls, air compressors, pumps and related equipment, fuel and exhaust systems, ignitions systems, electrical and brake components, transmissions, internal and external engine parts; grinds valves, resurfaces brake drum/rotor; changes oil, air filters, fuel filters, fan belts, radiator hoses, and sparkplugs; inspects, adjusts, and replaces necessary parts; tunes and adjusts engines.
  • Performs emergency road service to vehicles and equipment outside of the garage.
  • Overhauls and rebuilds engines, transmissions, alternators, starters, and other components.
  • Removes, repairs, and replaces component parts or assembles automotive systems; may perform simply oxy-acetylene and electrical welding.
  • Inspects and performs brake repairs, including the replacing of the master brake cylinder, brake pads, calipers, fluid lines; replaces or repairs clutches on manual transmissions.
  • Maintains and calibrates shop tools, machinery, and equipment; completes service orders to document parts and labor used in service and repair activities.
  • Road tests the operation of vehicles upon completion of repairs to ensure proper functioning and safe operating condition.
  • Operates a wide variety of hand and power driver tools and equipment, e.g., grinders, fender hammers, sanders, drill presses, lathes, testing and welding equipment.
  • Ensures the safe and proper operation of trades tools and power equipment; adheres to prescribed safety standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Performs duties as assigned/necessary which are related, or logical in assignment to the position.
Heavy Equipment Mechanic I (PG11)
Education: High School Diploma or equivalent. 
Experience: Three (3) years responsible experience in the repair and maintenance of gasoline and diesel driven motors and heavy equipment, machinery, and tools; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
Licenses/Certifications:
  • Must possess and maintain a Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) or have the ability to obtain within six (6) months of employment. (Tanker and Hazardous Materials Endorsements may be required)
  • Must possess Fire Apparatus Technician - Level 1 and Ambulance Technician - Level I Certifications or have the ability to obtain within four (4) years of employment.
Heavy Equipment Mechanic II (PG12)
Education: High School Diploma or equivalent. 
Experience: Three (3) years responsible experience in the repair and maintenance of gasoline and diesel driven motors and heavy equipment, machinery, and tools; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
Licenses/Certifications:
Must possess and maintain the following licenses/certifications:
  • Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) (Tanker and Hazardous Materials Endorsements may be required)
  • Fire Apparatus Technician - Level I Certification
  • Ambulance Technician - Level I Certification
  • Fire Apparatus Technician - Level II Certification or Ambulance Technician - Level II Certification
Heavy Equipment Mechanic III (PG13)
Education: High School Diploma or equivalent. 
Experience: Three (3) years responsible experience in the repair and maintenance of gasoline and diesel driven motors and heavy equipment, machinery, and tools; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
Licenses/Certifications:
Must possess and maintain the following licenses/certifications:
  • Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) (Tanker and Hazardous Materials Endorsements may be required)
  • Fire Apparatus Technician - Level I Certification
  • Ambulance Technician - Level I Certification
  • Fire Apparatus Technician - Level II Certification
  • Ambulance Technician - Level II Certification
Heavy Equipment Mechanic IV (PG14)
Education: High School Diploma or equivalent. 
Experience: Three (3) years responsible experience in the repair and maintenance of gasoline and diesel driven motors and heavy equipment, machinery, and tools; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
Licenses/Certifications:
Must possess and maintain the following licenses/certifications:
  • Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) (Tanker and Hazardous Materials Endorsements may be required)
  • Fire Apparatus Technician - Level I Certification
  • Ambulance Technician - Level I Certification
  • Fire Apparatus Technician - Level II Certification

Heavy Equipment Mechanic V (PG15)
Education: High School Diploma or equivalent. 
Experience: Three (3) years responsible experience in the repair and maintenance of gasoline and diesel driven motors and heavy equipment, machinery, and tools; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
Licenses/Certifications:
Must possess and maintain the following licenses/certifications:
  • Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) (Tanker and Hazardous Materials Endorsements may be required)
  • Fire Apparatus Technician - Level I Certification
  • Ambulance Technician - Level I Certification
  • Fire Apparatus Technician - Level II Certification
  • Ambulance Technician - Level II Certification
  • Fire Apparatus Technician – Master Level III Certification
  • Ambulance Technician – Master Level III Certification
  • Ability to understand, follow and direct written and oral instructions. 
  • Ability to read and write English; ability to read and understand service and maintenance manuals. 
  • Thorough knowledge of the assembly, maintenance and repair of a wide variety of heavy and special automotive gasoline and diesel driven equipment, e.g., automobiles, light and heavy trucks, mechanical equipment. 
  • Ability to operate various automobiles, light and heavy trucks, mechanical equipment and other gasoline and diesel driven motors, e.g., service trucks, forklifts, back hoe, fire trucks, dump trucks, lawn maintenance equipment, golf carts, motorcycles. 
  • Ability to operate basic office equipment, e.g., computer terminals, printers, copy machines, telephone systems, facsimile machines. 
  • Ability to perform physically demanding work, typically involving some combination of reaching, bending, stooping, kneeling, or crouching, and that may involve the lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials (50 – 100 pounds).
  • Ability to work in temperatures exceeding 100 degrees for extended periods of time. 
  • Ability to withstand exposure to dust, mold, fiberglass and various chemicals.
PHYSICAL DEMAND REQUIREMENTS:
Physical Demand: Heavy
  • 100 pounds maximum lifting.
  • Frequent (up to 2/3 of the work time) lifting, carrying up to 50 lbs.
  • Expressing or exchanging ideas by spoken word or perceiving sound by ear.
  • Good eyesight for production or safety of self and others.
  • Physical demand requirements are in excess of medium work.
  • Physical agility is required in climbing, bending, stooping, kneeling, reaching, and crawling.
